PAAZAB CHAIRMAN’S AWARD CITATION
CHAIRMAN’S AWARD CITATION
April 2010
Michelle Barrows

Michelle Barrows has
been employed as associate and then senior veterinarian at
Johannesburg Zoo since August 2003. She has overseen the
progression of the zoo’s veterinary department with a strong
emphasis on preventative medicine and education. On the
education side she has developed a popular externship
programme, which provides opportunities for veterinary
students and nurses to gain experience of and develop their
skills in wildlife and zoological medicine – a programme she
is still passionately driving to ensure that students locally
and internationally can share in her dream of working with
wildlife. She has provided training and skills development
opportunities for vets and students from over 20 different
countries.
More recently she organized the first
African Symposium on Zoological Medicine at Johannesburg Zoo
as part of the veterinary working group of PAAZAB. The three
aims of the event were as follows: the first was to provide
training and professional development opportunities for
veterinarians working with zoo animals, exotic pets and
wildlife; the second was to share knowledge and skills with
zoo veterinarian colleagues in other African countries; and
the third was to raise awareness, particularly amongst
students of zoological medicine as a career. This was an
overwhelming success with 200 delegates participating,
including zoo veterinarians from eight African countries. The
veterinarians from the rest of Africa also had an opportunity
to train in Johannesburg Zoo and the National Zoo during and
after the symposium. .
In recognition of this job so very well
done, and acknowledgement of such selfless efforts on behalf
of a grateful Association, the Chairman’s Award is conferred
upon Michelle Barrows. |
