No vehicles are allowed through the Zoo
between 8:30am and 5:30pm except for pre-arranged
deliveries/collections. Delivery vehicles are
allowed to enter the Zoo at the Stores Delivery
Entrance, at Upper Park drive, and they must be directed
exactly where to deliver or to collect. Jan Smuts Ave entrance only
allows for small-scale deliveries related to the
Administration Block, trucks are not allowed through
this entrance. The security guard on duty must check
the goods in the vehicles (according to the
delivery/collection check form issued) every time a
vehicle enters or leaves the Zoo. The Company name
and car registration number of expected vehicles must be
given to the security control room in advance. The
driver of any vehicle being driven in the Zoo must be
briefed to drive at the maximum speed of 20kph. No
cars are allowed to park at an event venue except for
vehicles that form part of the Disaster Management Plan.
No cars are allowed to park in the middle of the
road as this obstructs the free flow of Zoo traffic
(Public transport Ferries, Feeding trucks and walking
visitors)
Due
to animal safety the Zoo does not allow the use of
balloons, straws, fireworks and balls of any kind for
entertainment or individual use. The Zoo does not
allow bicycles, scooters, skateboards or any other rides
of a similar nature in the Zoo for the safety of our
visitors and our animals. Musical activities must be
communicated with the Zoo's Marketing Department and be
approved by Zoo Management prior to being held, due to
animal sensitivity considerations. There must be no
noise overflow into the surrounding suburbs from 10pm
to 9am the following morning. Certain noise types are a
disturbance to the animals and are not allowed in the
Zoo. Express written permission of Senior Management is
required.
Only gas braais are allowed
in the Zoo Open fire flames or campfires are only
allowed at designated areas (Bonfire areas at the Old
Elephant House, Education Centre and at the Restaurant's
fire place). The open fires should be controlled by
either a Zoo or a restaurant staff member.
Alcoholic beverages are not allowed through Public
access gates. Alcoholic beverages are allowed at
Private functions and must be restricted to the venue
where it is served (i.e. guest are not allowed to wander
around the Zoo with alcohol). Guests who have
overindulged will not be allowed to wander around the
Zoo as they can be destructive to self or animals and
property, and may pose a safety and security risk
considering that the Zoo houses wild, dangerous animals.
All functions
and events must be communicated in writing to the
Marketing Department of the Zoo. This is to prevent
double bookings. Except for own venues no tenant is
allowed to charge any client a venue hire fee of the
Zoo's gardens/premises unless discussed with the
Marketing Department. The Event Organiser must be
available to welcome his/her guests, or appoint an Event
Officer to welcome the expected guests. A copy of the
guest list must be given to the Zoo's representative
before the event. Such list will be managed by Security
who will ensure that the right guests are facilitated
accordingly. Any guests not appearing on the guest
list will have to pay entrance fees at the cashiers on
the day. Security in charge is not allowed to let
anyone into the Zoo's premises without entrance tickets,
unless in the case of private functions where special
passes/guest lists will be used. The Zoo does not
organise additional resources required for a private
function. The Event Organiser is required to arrange
their own manpower for an event/function. The
corporate image of the Johannesburg Zoo shall be used in
all advertising and marketing material both on and off
the Zoo property. All marketing and advertising
initiatives must be presented to and approved by the Zoo
management. The Tenant/ Event Organiser must ensure
that the surrounds of the premises, from which it
delivers visitor/client services, are at all times tidy,
clean and litter free. The company that hires a
venue at the Zoo or the Zoo itself takes responsibility
and liability of the incident during the event or
function at the Zoo.
Guests are not allowed to wander through the Zoo at
night without the escort of a Zoo staff member that is
familiar with the Zoo. The public is not allowed to
feed the animals. The Johannesburg Zoo/Tenant staff
are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and
client-orientated manner at all times (i.e. be courteous
to visitors). Except for designated Zoo staff no one
is allowed to enter the animal enclosures. For
security purposes all contractors' must enter and leave
the Zoo's premises through the Stores Delivery entrance. Security guards on duty must search all staff and
vehicles entering or leaving the Zoo at the Stores
entrance or any entrance should it be required. The
Zoo and contractor staff have been issued with ID cards
or nametags and/or uniforms to be identifiable to the
Visitor. The tenant shall be obliged to inform and
update the Zoo of the full names and identity numbers of
its permanent and part-time employees in order to assist
with safety, security and emergency arrangements.

Ferry
transport Ferry transport and guided tours must be
pre-booked through the Education Department and must be
booked well in advance as pre-payment is required.
It is the visitor's responsibility to behave in a
responsible manner while on board the Ferry transport.
Ferry transport is boarded at own risk. The
Johannesburg Zoo will not be liable for any incidents/
accidents or mishaps that happen while on board in the
ferry transport.
