220 disadvantaged children will be sleeping over at the Johannesburg Zoo.

On Friday 23 September 220 orphans and their care takers from Soweto, Thembisa, Ivory Park and Benoni will get to hear the sounds of the zoo’s nightlife and see the zoo’s wild animals after the sun sets. Johannesburg Zoo has given an opportunity for individuals from disadvantaged communities to enjoy our unique “zoo snooze” experience. This event forms part of the zoo’s 90 day roll out campaign instituted by Mayor Parks Tau which has seen over 7000 people from disadvantaged background enjoy a day at the zoo since July 2011 at no charge.

The sleepover promises to be an adventure the children will never forget because zoo snoozes are traditionally a tour only paying visitors get to do. The zoo snooze is one of the Johannesburg Zoo’s more unique tour packages which gives families and friends an outdoor camping adventure with a difference.

These youngsters, ranging in age from 9 to 17 years old will spend the night under the stars and get to camp outdoors in army tents. The programme will start at 5:45pm with a welcoming snack and dinner. After dinner the group will go on a night tour to see and learn about the nocturnal animal species housed at the zoo. The night ends off with stories around the bonfire before lights out at 10pm.

The programme doesn’t end there and the following morning will be an early start with a sunrise walk, one of the best times to enjoy the zoo. Breakfast is served at 6:30am followed by a final snake demonstration where they will be able to see and feel non-venomous snakes used for education.

The sleepover would not be possible without the financial contributions to the zoo’s Masibambisane project which enables people from disadvantaged communities to visit the zoo. Additionally the Johannesburg Zoo will cover the entrance cost of each child and thanks to Nashua and Café Fino for sponsoring food and 2nd Boksburg Scouts for sponsoring the army tents. In addition as part of Dental Month everyone will receive a toothbrush and toothpaste sponsored by the South African Dental Association.
