Miss Earth SA Finalists and the City Of Johannesburg Councillor plant trees at the Johannesburg Zoo

On 3rd September 2010, at least one thousand school learners, 2010 Miss Earth South Africa finalists and Councillor Matshediso Mfikoe - City of Johannesburg MMC for Shared Corporate Services and Environment Sector will plant trees at the Johannesburg Zoo to mark Arbor Day. The learners will interact with organisations such as Rand Water, Food and Trees for Africa, Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market, Grow-a-Tree, Sci-Bono, Johannesburg City Parks, Joburg Water, Sanbi, Miss Earth South Africa and Johannesburg Zoo at exhibition stands. These organisations will explain the importance of trees and how the learners can also contribute to reduction of environmental threats.

The session starts at 9h00 and runs until 12h00. Tree planting will take place at 11h00, followed by the roadshow with Manzi, Rand Water’s water-wise character. The theme for the day is “Humans and animals rely on plants”.

Arbor Day, like other biodiversity days, is very important to the zoo and its partners, as it puts environmental responsibility under the spotlight. It provides a platform for organisations like ours to advocate the sustainable use of all natural resources and to contribute to the development of a safe, clean and green City of Johannesburg. All stakeholders wish to lead by example and demonstrate wise use of natural resources and encourage the community to implement sustainable ‘green’ practices.
