Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and the City of Joburg's Emergency Services were alerted to a fire at one of the two restaurants at the Joburg Zoo on Friday night.

With thanks to the City's emergency management service for their speedy responseJOHANNESBURG City Parks and Zoo immediately deployed senior management and conservation specialists, to ensure that the safety and wellbeing off all animals and plants housed within the Zoo were not compromised.  The damage stemming from the fire was contained to the 'And Chips' restaurant only and an investigation is underway, to identify the cause of the fire.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo would like to assure the public, patrons to the Zoo and Friends of the Zoo that access to the Joburg Zoo has not been hampered and that the facility will continue to operate as normal.

 

On receipt of a comprehensive report from the various entities, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is committed to fully restoring the facility which has heritage value.

In the interim and as a precautionary measure, the area around the restaurant, has been cordoned off. Café Fino, at the Zoo has been advised to absorb any added pressure stemming from the unfortunate incident.
