Celebrate the role of water with a host of activities during March at the Johannesburg Zoo

Water is one of South Africa’s most scarce and valuable resources. During March we celebrate National water week from the 5 – 11th. The theme of the campaign is “Water is life: Respect it, Conserve it, Enjoy it.” Johannesburg Zoo will be spreading its own message throughout the month about the importance of water to the lives of animals. There will be a number of fun activities and informative events including enrichment for our water loving animals on weekends, educational activities for schools on the 22 – 23 of March, an informative evening talk about sustainable seafood use and a fundraising walk for Wattled Cranes on the 25th.

The Zoo is running a poster competition to get people thinking about the importance of water in the lives’ of animals. Posters must be A3 or A2 size and must be created by hand using crayons, paint, coloured pencils, markers The closing date is the 23rd of March with 1st place winning a behind the scenes tour for 10 people and 2nd place winning 5 complimentary tickets to the zoo. Entries can be dropped off at the zoos main admin office on Jan Smuts Ave, the information kiosk on Upper Park Drive. Entries can also be posted to Private Bag X13, Parkview, 2122 or emailed to zoophotos@jhbzoo.org.za.

On the 22nd & 23rd the education team will be celebrating water week and showing schools “respect for water” where they will visit the Zoo’s wetland and learn about the animals which live in wetlands such as amphibians and cranes. There will also be demonstrations from Rand Water and Joburg City Parks. Public visiting the zoo on Saturdays will be able to enjoy wild water animal enrichment where animals such as hippo, tiger, polar bears and the otter are entertained with activities such as ice lollies with frozen fruit, vegetables and even meat (for the carnivores). The hippos will enjoy playing with a plastic drum in there dam, testing their agility and strength.

Events planned to deal with conservation of water include an evening lecture on the 16th of March with SASSI (Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) about conservation of marine habitats. For those unable to attend the talk there will be an information booth where visitors can learn about SASSI at the main entrance on Wednesday 21st (Human Right’s Day). There will be a fundraising walk/run for the Wattled Crane Recovery Programme on Sunday the 25th of March at 7am. See the timetable below for more information on these events.
