Inspiring day hosted by Johannesburg Zoo for 1000 children from orphanages around Gauteng.

Over two weekends (26th of March and 2nd of April) the Johannesburg Zoo hosted its 1st annual Children's Day event ,which saw over 1000 children from orphanages from around Gauteng visit the zoo for an action packed day of both fun and educational activities.

On the 2nd of April in amongst the children were a number of esteemed guests including the MMC Matshidiso Mfikoe, Councilor Walters, Councilor Moosejee and Councilor Greef and representing the Johannesburg Zoo was Board Chairperson Professor Kasan and CEO Dr. Stephen van der Spuy. Councilor Mfikoe and CEO Dr. Stephen van der Spuy opened the day's event with a tree planting ceremony.

Following this the children busied themselves with a host of fun games, face painting, live animal demonstrations by the zoo's education team, a display from Rand Water's Waterwise team and ending with the children receiving lunch and goodie bags. It was clear from the many smiling faces that the day left lasting memories for all 600 children and thanks must be given to all the staff involved in this inspiring day.

Joburg Zoo plans to host Children's Day annually as an event targeted at giving an opportunity to 1000 children from disadvantaged backgrounds. This year's event would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors. The Joburg Zoo will next host a Youth Day event on the 16th of June which will see 1000 inner city youths ranging in age from 14 to 18 years old visiting the zoo.
