The zoo mourns the tragic death of Joe Ramonetha, who passed away on 13 February 2012 after he was attacked by a lioness.



Johannes (Joe) Ramonetha joined Johannesburg Zoo in 1970, after working for the council of Johannesburg where he started at an age of 17. He was humble, calm and never got angry with anyone. Joe was always willing to help and go an extra mile. He was reliable such that, earlier in his career, he was responsible for transporting zoo staff between Parktown Train Station and the Johannesburg Zoo Farm in Rietvlei. He was loved and respected by most zoo staff.

He spent most of his time working at zoo farms, firstly at Rietvlei and when Rietvlei moved to Ruitkuil he was amongst the first people to work there.

He was born in Ravelle, Venda on 11 August 1948. He them moved to Botlokwa Ga-Sekonya in the Limpopo province. He was married with 5 children. He is survived by 4 siblings, his wife, 5 children and 9 grand children.
