Johannesburg Zoo joins the world in celebrating World Wetlands Day.

The Johannesburg Zoo celebrates World Wetlands Day on the 2 February and has invited four schools from Gauteng province to join-in the celebration. A minimum of 240 pupils are expected to visit the zoo.

The celebration starts at 9h30 and will end around 10h30, where visitors will be part of the global celebration of wetlands and their value for biodiversity. The event is earmarked to raise public awareness of wetlands and their value, educate people about conserving wetlands and share the benefits of the Johannesburg Zoo wetland.

Deona Brough, Manager of Education is very excited about the celebration. She believes that very little is known about wetlands, even though they are cradles of biological diversity. The celebration presents a perfect opportunity as the Johannesburg Zoo will engage with at least 240 children on the day, sharing experiences whilst educating the young about wetlands, and most importantly contributing to conservation.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February; it marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of international importance in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971. South Africa also has wetlands of international importance; at least 12 sites such as St. Lucia, Langebaan on the west coast, Barberspan in Gauteng and De Hoop Vlei in the Cape are recognised.

Letta Madlala, Brand & Communications Manager said that the Johannesburg Zoo directly confronts conservation issues and actively promotes conservation. She believes events such as World Wetlands Day celebration will serve to educate and inspire zoo visitors to play an active role in conservation of biodiversity and these efforts may have a significant contribution to global sustainability.
