BABY GIRAFFE MAKES A SPECIAL DEBUT AT THE JOHANNESBURG ZOO.

Johannesburg, February 15, 2006

On April 17, 2004 Johannesburg Zoo saw the birth of a baby Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis) for the first time in 30 years; but our excitement was short lived. The baby Giraffe died after a week.

“It is extremely difficult for Giraffes to breed successfully in captivity. The critical first week when the mother and baby must be isolated from the herd is not always possible in captivity” said Piet Malepa, the section Keeper.

To the zoo’s delight, a male calf weighing 100 kg was born on 20 January. Immediately, the male giraffe was separated from the mother and the calf for two weeks. This was done because males become over-protective of calves, to the extent that the calves don’t suckle and eventually die. We are very excited that the critical first two weeks have passed without incident. However, the Zoo Vet and section Keeper are constantly monitoring its health. They have said it is becoming stronger every day and is starting to interact more with its mother.

Visitors may see this adorable calf at the Giraffe enclosure. The Zoo is open every day between 08.30 am and 05.30 pm. Please contact Senzo Ngcobo for a photo opportunity.
