Johannesburg Update first Dreamnight
1 December 2005.
Our very first Dreamnight at the Zoo was met with summer showers
that did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the staff and
volunteers on the night. We had 197 VIP’s with their family or
helpers attending the first African Dreamnight.
The rain prevented the animal encounters planned through out the
zoo, but luckily we were still able to entertain our visitors
indoors with costume characters, reptiles, small mammals and
refreshments. All the guests were taken on a brief tour of the
zoo on the ferry, where they were treated to spectacular
displays of a cowboy and Indian on horseback chasing after them!
Staff frantically prepared eats and served some of the children
around a bonfire and the others while watching a puppet show. It
was not long before the next thundershower interrupted the
interactions with Tony Tiger and the guests were packed back on
to the ferries to drive past the huge tree of light and the
spectacular Christmas lights on the way back to the gate.
When returning to their buses, all the children received
packages to take home with a teddy-bear, colouring books,
crayons, t-shirts and sweets in. These gifts were handed out by
the staff and volunteers from the police.
What a fantastic event! The staff and volunteers excelled in
making the evening an unforgettable one for all the special
little people on the night. We are looking forward to next year
and hoping for a dry evening and the continued support of all
our partners who helped with the event and the donations.
