Rare gene white lions population grows at Johannesburg Zoo
Johannesburg, April 5, 2004
Once again, there is a newborn at the Johannesburg Zoo! It is with pride to announce an addition to Zoo prides, two rare gene white lions cubs were born 8 weeks ago. They are both male. They will be making their public debut on 01 May 2004 at Anglo Gold lion enclosure.
The first discovery of white lions was in the late 80’s. It was found that, it was extremely difficult for white lions to survive in the wild. This was because their preys could see them miles away. Surprise attacks were almost impossible. So, they depended on weak and sick preys to survive or die.
As a result, conservationists’ classified white lions as extinct, a decision was taken to conserve and breed them. The Johannesburg Zoo is proud to introduce two newly born white lions cubs.
Successful breeding of these rear lions is as a result of our excellent environment that simulate actual wild in which they leave in.
Visitors can see these adorable young white cubs at Anglo Gold lion’s enclosure. The Zoo is open every day between 08h30 am and 05h30 pm.
