ZOO appeal to the public for assistance

Johannesburg, June, 2008

The Joburg zoo is appealing to the members of the public within the vicinity of the zoo to help out with browse for the giraffes. Currently Johannesburg zoo has two giraffes which feed predominately on leaves of the following plant species:

- Mulberry
- Rhys lance
- Acacia sub-species
- Celtic African Jacaranda tree and other edible species.

The zoo can’t meet these demands since giraffes are predominately browsers [75% of the diets consists of plant materials].

The zoo is doing its best to provide them with browse daily but that is not good enough given the fact that the amount of browse they need is either too little or of low nutritional value.

This is part of the reason why the zoo consistently needs help from people who are close by. For those who can, the zoo will appreciate it if people can make some means to bring the browse to the zoo.

For more information contact: Piet Malepa (Head of the section) on 0824370266 or Giraffe Keeper Richard on 0780711640/Kenneth on 011 646 2000 ext 249.

The zoo appreciates your endless help in working together in conserving these animals.
