Emergency operation on Lisa the gorilla: experts suspect it may be cancer.

Johannesburg, April 4, 2006

Life-long partner of Max the gorilla, Lisa, may have cancer. Few weeks ago, the keeper that looks after the Apes noticed a lump next to her breast. Veterinarian experts suspect that it may be cancer.

The Zoo’s vets have been closely monitoring her condition. Due to the worsening condition of the lump, a decision was taken last week for an emergency operation on Wednesday, 5 April 2006. The 35-year-old Lisa will be operated by senior veterinarian Dr Michelle Barrows assisted by two top Gauteng human specialist doctors.

Hopefully, results will be out by the end of next week.
