Makoko - the first week in Africa
Johannesburg, December 2, 2004
It was pure joy when Makoko arrived safe and sound at Johannesburg International Airport on Friday, 26 November. Members of Metro Police and bikers escorted Makoko to his new home at the Johannesburg Zoo from the Harley Davidson Club. Staff members were waiting at the Zoo to give him a warm welcome. He was immediately transferred to a 45-day quarantine.
Makoko is settling very well at the quarantine facility. Today was a special day as he saw Lisa for the very first time. He saw her via a mirror and was excited.
Makoko’s German Curator from Munster Zoo, Barbel Uptofer, is with him for a few days to ensure he settles well in the new environment. Barbel is also assisting the Zoo to understand Makoko and his behavior, his likes and dislikes - we have just learnt that his favorite snack is yogurt. His diet includes apples, grapes, lettuce, leeks and onions.
