SAVE THE RHINO campaign gets into high gear at the Johannesburg Zoo

Johannesburg, March 28, 2006

When EAZA (The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) in conjunction with Save the Rhino International (SRI) invited international participation of the Save the Rhino campaign, Johannesburg Zoo became the first Zoo in Africa to join the initiative. The campaign aims to raise international awareness of the threats rhinos face and to promote protection of these endangered animals and, secondly, to raise funds, which will directly support selected rhino conservation projects in Asia and Africa.

The Johannesburg Zoo has chosen the 8 April 2006, as the Rhino Day. On this day, the public is invited to take part in raising funds for the Save the Rhino campaign. A rhino silhouette has been erected next to the rhino enclosure for people to write their rhino special messages for a donation of R50 or more. Donations will also be taken during Rhino Talks given by the keepers. There will also be exciting activities for young and old on this day. These include; Rhino Talks, Rhino characters, Rhino competitions, face painting, Tea garden, Be-A-Rhino Ranger and many more.

Save the Rhino Day will take place as follows:

Date: Saturday, 08 April 2006
