Johannesburg Zoo’s Chief Executive Officer Resigns.

Johannesburg, October 22, 2007

The Chief Executive Officer of the Johannesburg Zoo, Ms Jenny Gray, has tendered her resignation from the Johannesburg Zoo in order to take up a position as the Director of the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne, Australia.

Ms Gray joined the Johannesburg Zoo in November 2004. In the last 4 years, the Johannesburg Zoo has seen incredible investment from the City of Johannesburg to deliver on the aim of being a World Class Zoo. Numerous enclosures have been upgraded and many animals now enjoy an improved living environment. In June 2007 the Johannesburg Zoo achieved PAAZAB accreditation indicating that the Zoo is operating according to international standards.

The Board of the Johannesburg Zoo has appointed Dr Stephen van der Spuy to act as the Chief Executive Officer of the Johannesburg Zoo when Ms Gray leaves at the end of November 2007. Dr van der Spuy has been the Animal Collection Manager at the Johannesburg Zoo for just over 3 years. Prior to his appointment at the Johannesburg Zoo he was the General Manager of the Monte Casino Bird Gardens.

The recruitment process for a new Chief Executive Officer will commence immediately

“We are sad to loose Ms Gray and we wish her well with her new venture. The Johannesburg Zoo is a strong organisation and we are confident that the management team will ensure that it continues to deliver world-class service to the citizens of Johannesburg” said Mr. Ike Ngwena, Chairman of the Board of the Johannesburg Zoo.
