Lisa’s lonely days are over!

Johannesburg, November 22, 2004

May 5th was a dark day in Johannesburg Zoo history, for this was the day when the well-loved Max the Gorilla died in his sleep of old age.

Many remember how Max rose to instant stardom when he apprehended a burglar that jumped into his enclosure while trying to escape police capture. Max himself was shot twice in the process.

The Johannesburg Zoo is thrilled to announce that it has finally found a new partner for Lisa! His name is Makoko and he is on permanent loan from Munster Zoo in Germany. Makoko will fly into Johannesburg International Airport on the 26 November 2004, courtesy of SAA Cargo who is flying him free of charge directly from Frankfurt.

“Johannesburg Zoo’s famous gorillas are part of the city’s attraction. SAA Cargo takes great pleasure in helping bring one of Africa’s mighty and respected animals home for the enjoyment and education of all,” says Patrick Dlamini, Vice President SAA Cargo.

“It is heart-warming that Lisa will once again have a companion.”

Two officials from Johannesburg Zoo travelling on the same flight as Mokoko will have access to him during the journey in order to monitor him.

SAA Cargo transport different species of live animals on various of its routes. This is done in strict compliance with the provisions and requirements of the International Aviation and Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and is applied by major airline’s around the world.

“SAA Cargo carries out the most stringent safety and precautionary measures while transporting animals and ensure they are treated in the most humane manner,” says Dlamini.

Upon his arrival, Makoko will immediately be transferred to a 45-day quarantine at Johannesburg Zoo facilities.

During the quarantine period, the Zoo will publish regular updates on the well-being of the new male gorilla. The date of Makoko’s first public appearance will be made known in due course.

The media are invited to meet the new arrival at the airport on Friday at 3pm and thereafter to escort him home in true African style. For more information and to confirm your attendance, please contact Senzo on 646 2000 Ext 225.
