Be afraid, be very afraid – Halloween at the Zoo

Johannesburg, October 15, 2007

Some people say creepy, some say spooky but at the Johannesburg Zoo it”s all fun and Halloween games. Join us as we celebrate one of the exciting days of the year ‘Howloween at the zoo’.

As you might know, the origins of Halloween came from the Celts who lived in Scotland; they believed that the Lord of Death releases souls back to Earth on Oct 31. The Celts wore scary costumes because they believed that the evil spirits wouldn't recognize them as humans and wouldn't mess with them. This is where the tradition of dressing up in costumes on Halloween came from.

Every year the Johannesburg Zoo celebrates this children fun-filled spooky night by “dressing up for the occasion”. Everyone is invited to trick and treat at the Zoo. We cater for the youngsters with no scary stuff as well as for the older children and adults to scare you witless!
