Makoko - see him today!

Johannesburg, December 14, 2004

Makoko is settling well in his new home at the Johannesburg Zoo. “I am very impressed that Makoko is eating all the food items offered to him,” Phillip Cronje, Primate Curator said. This is a good sign, it shows that the primate is accepting its new environment, he further added.

Due to public demand to see Makoko, the Zoo welcomes a sponsorship from Cats Digital Expert and Sony SA, consisting of two CCTV surveillance cameras, which are placed in his quarantine facility. Due to quarantine restrictions the CCTV cameras have been fitted through a hole drilled in the wall of the enclosure. This was done to avoid human contact with the gorilla. Pictures are then fed to a 50-inch Sony Plasma screen located at public viewing deck of the gorilla enclosure.

Makoko is on the 19th day of the 45-day quarantine.
