Redeveloping the Johannesburg Zoo

Johannesburg, January 13, 2005

The six-zone-plan has been created to transform the Johannesburg Zoo into an adventure experience, which have been themed “Explore our wild places”. Zones include The Heart of Africa; Amazonia; The Spice Route; Southern Safari; Extreme Environment and Farmyard (with Children’s Party Venue). For a detailed description of these zones visit our website www.jhbzoo.org.za and click to redevelopment plan.

2004 was an exciting year for the Johannesburg Zoo - the year we kick- started our five-year re-zoning and development plan. The completion of the New Ape House and Forrest Floor projects were milestones that generated a huge interest amongst visitors; in the first quarter of the financial year alone, we have seen a 7% increase on visitors figures.

The next major project to be tackled by the Johannesburg Zoo is the upgrade of the Carnivore Curve that falls under the Southern Safari. This facility was built over 40 years ago and is one of the worst displays in the Zoo. The plan allows for:
  • Filling of the moat, thus doubling the size of the enclosures,
  • Planting of shade trees,
  • Creation of a small stream and waterfalls,
  • Netting of five of the enclosures

, thereby enhancing visitor experience and developing educational opportunities.

These changes will make the enclosures far more versatile as they will be able to hold large predators, small cats, primates or large birds. The changes will also be instrumental in creating a holding area while other development elements unfolds.

At this stage, the bulk of the enclosures at Carnivore Curve are empty and the area is not a pleasant visitor experience. As such, the visitor path on the North-side of Carnivore Curve will be closed to the public with immediate effect and for the duration of the construction phase.
