Going going gone! Its animal auction night at the Johannesburg Zoo

Johannesburg, 12 April 2005

Yes, it’s true…the Zoo is putting majority of its animal under the auctioneer’s hammer. Mike Herman (Senior Curator) describes the event as “ONE OF A KIND” in his 35 years with the Johannesburg Zoo.

This is how the auction will take shape: The auction is targeted at organisations that are committed to Corporate Social Investment and anyone who wants to see the Johannesburg Zoo become a world-class organisation. A corporate auction will take place during a gala dinner on Friday, 29 April 2005, 7pm at the Tree-of-Light lawn. Tables will be sold to corporates at R10 000 for 10 people. This will include dinner and selected drinks. The public auction will take place on Saturday, 30 April 2005, 11-2pm at the Band Stand.

All animals on auction will be on view prior to the auction and WILL have reserve price. The proceeds from sales will go to the upgrade of enclosures, medical expenses, food and animal enrichment programmes. The animals will NOT be taken home, not because we think you can’t take good care of them, but because the Zoo have specialist who will take care of your animals on your behalf.
