Cichlids

Cognitive enrichment:

Terracotta pots are placed around the aquarium. These provide the fish with the opportunity to explore and hide if they feel the need.

Sensory enrichment:

The Cichlids are given different varieties of plants and reefs, similar to what they’d encounter in the wild. These plants and grasses are changed on a weekly basis to give the fish a variety of environments that they can feed on and explore.

Food enrichment:

On certain days you’ll see plastic chains with pots or bottles attached, hanging in to the aquarium. These are part of the food enrichment provided to the fish. Larvae and insects are put into the bottles and the fish can pick them out to eat. Frozen ice treats with fish food inside are also provided regularly to encourage foraging behaviour in the fish.
