Assistant Keeper Herpetologist
6 months contract


The Johannesburg zoo is looking for a skilled and experienced Assistant Keeper Herpetologist with a thorough understanding of the role and function of a modern zoological collection to take responsibility for our reptile section for six months. The incumbent will assist us with the completion of an exciting new reptile exhibit as well as a new ex situ amphibian conservation program. This is a job for a diligent, hands-on and committed person. The position is short-term.

Assistant Keeper Herpetologist .

Reporting to the Curator of Fish and Reptiles, this job entails caring for all reptiles at the Johannesburg Zoo, as well as fish, amphibians and arachnids when necessary, according to international standards.
Responsibilities will include all aspects of the daily husbandry and management of a large and diverse reptile collection in conjunction with the other section staff, record keeping, research and scientific writing, and participation in wider herpetological and zoo activities and organisations.

The incumbent will be required to;
� Join and be active on the Amphibian Conservation Project as well as to be able to spend time in the field collecting specimens or data when required.
� Maintain and improve a professional and positive animal care program for organisms at the Joburg zoo.
� Be responsible for the satisfactory appearance and operation of all assigned exhibits and support areas.
� Maintain and propagate plants used within or around exhibits.
� Develop new exhibits.
� Provide proper husbandry for the herpetological and invertebrate collections.
� Provide behavioural and / or environmental enrichment to the animals in their care.
� Assist with the acquisition of new specimens for the collection.
� Assist in maintaining an inventory of the collection.
� Timeously submit reports, inventories, husbandry manuals, plans, purchasing plans etc. as required.
� Monitor the dietary habits of the animals and ensure that good nutrition is maintained.
� Assist with the coverage of other areas and living collections on section as needed.
� Assist with public education.
� Safely handle venomous snakes and arachnids as well as other dangerous herpetofauna.
� Take on all duties of section Keepers in their absence as required.

Requirements:
� Matric certificate.
� Minimum Code B ( 8 ) drivers licence with own transport.
� At least 3 verifiable years of experience in the handling, restraint and maintenance of venomous reptiles.
� Prior experience with crocodilians, fish and amphibians in particular will be an advantage.
� Good written and verbal communication skills including presentations to the public are essential.
� Good supervisory and interpersonal skills.
� Computer literacy skills � Windows environment, Powerpoint, Internet, Social media.
� In order to assist with and be safe at other exhibits on the section, the applicant must be able to swim well.
� Applicants must be available any of the seven days of the week. They will regularly be required to work weekends, public holidays and after hours.
� Ability to lift 20kg and work in high temperatures (28˚C plus), humid or dusty environments and elevated or enclosed spaces.

Project Manager
Description

The role of the Project Manager is to plan, execute, and finalize projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan. The Project Manager will also define the project's objectives and oversee quality control throughout its life cycle.

Responsibilities
� Direct and manage project development from beginning to end.
� Define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business goals in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders.
� Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders

Position Requirements
� Degree or diploma in Construction management or related field
� At least 10 years direct work experience in a project management capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution.
� Strong familiarity with project management software, such as Microsoft Projects
� Solid working knowledge of current computer technologies
� Demonstrated experience in personnel management.
� Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.

Job Outputs

� Establish and maintain a high standard of animal husbandry and exhibit maintenance with regard to all Primates including Great Apes at the Johannesburg Zoo;
� Co-ordinate daily operations and supervise staff , interns, students and volunteers that are responsible for all aspects of animal care including cleaning, feeding, watering, observing, record keeping and maintaining exhibits;
� Observing and reporting abnormal behaviour, helping the veterinary department with procedures and to implement preventative medicine, dispensation of drugs and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian;
� Implements and oversees training of area personnel;
� Ensures compliance with PAAZAB accreditation standards.
� Makes recommendations regarding animal husbandry and management changes, including diet changes, habitat redesign and operational efficiencies;
� Maintenance and furnishing of exhibits modify and upgrading of existing or planned exhibits and assists in exhibit design and renovations.
� Manage the capture, restraint and transport of animals;
� Maintains detailed records on animal behaviour, physical condition, reproduction, facility condition and prepares comprehensive monthly reports;
� Maintains animal inventory and initiates ARKS record entries;
� Develop and implement enrichment programmes for all primates;
� Develop and implement animal training practises for management and for veterinary purposes;
� Ability to organise tasks and time to ensure timely completion of projects.
� Ability to work with and be comfortable around potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species.
� Assist with tours and Educational programmes.
