The Johannesburg Zoo, a Municipal Owned Entity established in 1904
and corporatised as a Section 21 company by its main shareholder,
the City of Johannesburg in 2000, is looking for dynamic and
resourceful individuals to fill the following posts:
TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT VACANCIES
Reporting to the Executive Manager- Technical Services Department,
the successful incumbents will be responsible for managing and
implementing an effective and efficient infrastructure maintenance
program and capital project management
MAINTENANCE MANAGER
Responsibilities: infrastructure planning and review;
infrastructure maintenance program implementation and review;
inventory monitoring; tool and equipment maintenance; maintains
electronic maintenance job card tracking system; operation of plant
and equipment systems monitoring; development and update of
operating and training manuals; people management, employee
development; occupational health and safety management; financial
performance and overall operational management..
PROJECT MANAGER (12-month
fixed-term contract)
Responsibilities: Plan, execute and finalise capital projects
according to strict deadlines and within budget. People management,
employee development; occupational health and safety management;
financial performance reporting and overall technical operational
management.
Requirements: For both positions a Minimum Diploma/ Degree in
Construction Management coupled with at least 5 years in facility/
building maintenance industry. A Code 8 drivers’ licence and proven
people management skills; excellent time management skills;
knowledge and experience in the application and enforcement of
safety measures, financial performance reporting and computer skills
are essential.
ELECTRICIAN
Reporting to the Technical Foreman- the successful incumbent shall
be responsible for facilitating and performing all major and minor
electrical works within the Zoo.
Responsibilities:
Performs specific electrical activities during minor and major works
i.e. major installation, maintenance and repair works, site
preparation, cable laying, removal and replacement of components on
isolated circuits, conduct and report load test outcomes and any
other electrical work as required by the Zoo.
Requirements: National
Certificate Vocational (NQF Level 4) Electrical Engineering plus 3
years’ electrical facility maintenance experience.
ANIMAL DEPARTMENT VACANCIES
CURATOR - CARNIVORES
Reporting to the Executive Manager – Animal Department, the
successful incumbent will be responsible for the management of
Johannesburg Zoo Carnivore Collection to international standards.
Responsibilities include:
Leadership and people management; basic financial management;
employee management and development; enclosure management; assist in
implementation of the overall animal collection plan; supply chain
management; management of the carnivore collection; management of
preventative medicine programmes, management of enrichment and
nutritional programs; assist with and develop carnivore collection
plans., Active studbook management and participation in ex- and in-
situ conservation and research projects. (The incumbent’s
responsibilities will include certain species of rodentia and
pinnipedia).
Requirements: Minimum
Bachelors’ degree / ND in Nature Conservation or similar plus at
least 5 years’ experience working with carnivores or in a carnivore
related field. People management skills, customer-focused approach
and computer literacy skills are a must.
KEEPER- RIETKUIL BREEDING
AND RESEARCH FARM
Reporting to the Manager-Rietkuil Breeding and Research Farm, the
objective of the position is to maintain a high standard of animal
husbandry at the Johannesburg Zoo’s farm, Rietkuil in Parys, Free
State.
Responsibilities: Staff
supervision and development, report compilation, project management,
animal husbandry and enclosure maintenance. Assist with: nutritional
evaluation of diets, animal hand-rearing, implementation and
operation of captive breeding programmes, animal acquisition and
disposition, behavioural enrichment, hygiene and pest control.
Adhere to and ensure adherence to all Zoo policies, procedures,
codes and related legislation, Signage maintenance.
Requirements: A
National Diploma in Nature Conservation coupled with minimum 3
years’ experience with a bias to conservation / research. Report
writing, people management and computer literacy are essential.
